France’s back-to-school allowance (ARS) 2026: who gets it, when, how much
ARS 2026: mainland payment ~Tue 18 Aug (CAF), Réunion / Mayotte ~4 Aug; post-April reval amounts ~€426.87 / ~€450.41 / ~€466.02; automatic for ages 6–15 if file OK — not personal advice.
A back-to-school benefit, not a random bonus
Every August, France’s allocation de rentrée scolaire (ARS) — the back-to-school allowance — returns in feeds: payment date, amounts, “who qualifies.” It is not a lottery gift. It is a means-tested benefit, paid by CAF or MSA, to help with school-related costs (supplies, clothes, and so on) — without euro-by-euro spending checks.
This piece follows the frame from Service-Public and CAF. It is not personal advice or a rights simulation: always check your Mon Compte space / your fund.
When: 2026 calendar (CAF / official dates)
According to CAF and Service-Public:
| Area | Announced payment |
|---|---|
| Mainland France + Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique | Tuesday 18 August 2026 |
| Réunion and Mayotte | Tuesday 4 August 2026 (already past as of this piece) |
CAF also says rights are often visible in Mon Compte shortly before the transfer (around 12 August for mainland / French Caribbean–Guiana; earlier for Réunion / Mayotte). The exact credit day on your bank account can slip by a day depending on the bank — read “CAF payment” as release date, not necessarily the hour your banking app updates.
How much: amounts after the April 2026 revaluation
Service-Public notes a revaluation on 1 April 2026. For the 2026 school year, CAF / Service-Public amounts (mainland and most overseas départements outside Mayotte’s specific scale) sit around:
| Age (CAF benchmarks) | 2026 amount |
|---|---|
| Ages 6–10 | ~€426.87 |
| Ages 11–14 | ~€450.41 |
| Ages 15–18 | ~€466.02 |
For Mayotte, CAF publishes a slightly different scale tied to school level (primary / lower secondary / upper secondary) — check the CAF page if that applies to you. Income ceilings depend on the number of dependent children; they live in official sheets, not in a headline.
Who: age, schooling, file status
CAF’s 2026 markers: children born between 16 September 2008 and 31 December 2020, plus younger children already enrolled in CP (first year of primary). The idea: roughly ages 6–18 around term start, in school, higher education or apprenticeship depending on the case.
Automatic or not:
- Ages 6–15: if you are already a recipient, meet the income conditions and keep an up-to-date file, payment is in principle automatic — no fresh “ARS form” every year.
- Ages 16–18: you must confirm schooling / studies / apprenticeship (CAF Mon Compte or MSA). Without confirmation, the transfer can wait.
- CP before age 6: a school certificate to send, per CAF.
If nothing lands on the 18th: frequent causes restated by funds / press — over the ceiling, incomplete file, 16–18 schooling not declared, unreported change of situation. That is not necessarily a “national oversight.”
What the ARS is not
- Not proof that “back-to-school costs exactly €427.”
- Not a right outside income ceilings and age / schooling rules.
- Not a substitute for a real household budget, or a tool for comparing school-supply prices across countries.
Read the amounts as a flat aid per eligible child, published by CAF / Service-Public — and cross-check your account before treating them as cash-flow planning. If you depend on MSA rather than CAF, the calendar and screens differ slightly: same logic (income, age, schooling), different portal.
In practice, payment week is mainly for checking: rights shown, bank details up to date, 16–18 confirmation done, any early-CP certificate sent. The rest — “why did my neighbour get it and not me” — almost always lives in ceilings or the file, not in a nationwide glitch on 18 August.
One more hedge useful on feeds: “paid on Tuesday” is the funds’ announced release. Banks post at different speeds; a Wednesday morning credit can still match a Tuesday CAF payment. Treat social posts that scream “late again” with that lag in mind before assuming your file was rejected.
